Kacy Wiggins, who records his solo excursions in quirky dubwise ambience as Quiet Personal Electronics (or qpe), is a rare breed of musician. Where most electronica artists hide behind funky bombast or cool, digital distance, Wiggins seduces with gentleness, warmth and goodheartedness. Not quite downtempo, not quite dub, definitely not drum'n'bass and definitely not lounge, his music is effortlessly enjoyable but difficult to parse. His label calls the music "hip hop nouveau," but while that term captures the funky matrix in which everything on this album floats, it doesn't do justice, for example, to either the textural pointillism of "Mirrored" or the loping swing of "Lapland". This music is the aural equivalent of the really smart, kind of geeky kid you knew in high school, the one who seemed to know everything but whom no one resented because he was kind and self-deprecating and funny. Makes you wonder if that's what Kacy Wiggins is like. If not, he sure knows how to fake it.

URSULA 1000 (Eighteen Street Lounge)

The man behind URSULA 1000 is none other than the mild mannered, multi-instrumentalist Alex Gimeno. Alex cannot be boxed in, categorized or labeled, his music is a multi-leveled eclectic blend of styles and genres. Finding a label to house this eclecticism could be tricky. Lo and behold came the smart and highly respected Eighteenth Street Lounge Music label, operated by Washington DCís Thievery Corporation.

special live performance by
FORRO IN THE DARK (Nublu)

Of all amazing bands that play at Nublu, Forro in the Dark is the one that has been packing this Lower East Side club full of sweat-covered revelers every single Wednesday for the past two and a half years. Rain, snow, shine—there’s always a line outside on a Wednesday night. Why? Because the band captures a vibe that can only be created in this part of town, in this part of the world, by the kind of musicians that come out of Nublu. On March 4th, we're bringing their vibes to our loft party. Not to be missed!

Giant Step News & Announcements | See below for details

543Before we jump into this things this month I’d like to say a few words about the passing of Jay Dee (aka J Dilla).  While I didn’t know him personally, his music and the music he produced for other artists (A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, Common, De La Soul, Steve Spacek and The Pharcyde to name a few) have played a crucial role in the soundtrack of my life.  Some have said he represented the new sound of Detroit, while others have been going on about how he’s that underground cat who’s impact will be far too often overlooked by the mainstream.  I agree with both, but more importantly I always admired the fact that even with chronic health problems Dilla was unapologetically committed to his craft.  He was rumored to have completed tracks for his Dilla’s Donuts album, released last week, from his hospital bed.  He lived it, he breathed it, Dilla was hip hop and he will personally be missed by this product of the true hip hop generation.  At 32 years of age he was robbed from us way too soon.  We had the pleasure to work with Stones Throw Records on the promotion side of things for his collaborative Jaylib album Champion Sound a few years back and with a heavy heart I’ll be anxiously looking forward to the release of his BBE Records album The Shining (hoping that this will still see the light of day) in June.  J Dilla R.I.P.  Many have been sharing their well wishes and memories of Dilla’s music in our Forums.  I encourage you to visit and chime in if you wish: http://www.giantstep.net/forums/655/read/2692

On the Giant Step side of things this update comes just in time for Valentine’s Day, so let’s call it the Lover’s Edition of the Giant Step DJ Update.  Because we love you all we’ve totally redesigned the Giant Step web page and included all kinds of new features including up-to-date News, expanded Essential Features and new radio shows in our Jukebox from Gilles Peterson, Los Amigos Invisibles and Alex from Jazzanova (coming very soon).
