PUBLIC PROGRAM:

Schablone Berlin book launch & talk. Friday, February 24th

A slide talk by authors, Caroline Koebel & Kyle Schlesinger at 6:30 PM, repeated at 7:15 PM

Schablone Berlin is an artists’ book as well as a book of documentation, presenting stencil graffiti from the streets of Germany’s most international metropolis. The book consists of over 100 color photographs showing not only the graffiti, but also its placement within the confines of the city. The introduction examines the semiotic and performative aspects of stencils as a populist form of writing within the contexts of art history, media and urban anthropology. Post-Face by Dennis Tedlock.

Project Conversations unites a diverse group of artists, both individuals and groups. It is not governed by a common structured concept, but is mainly concerned with a different way of thinking or contemplation on art and society, in terms of their functioning, collective work and reflection. Thus a special social space is created where no single language of truth is prevalent. Instead it enables the transformation of the voice of the other. And since all meaning is relative and provisional, there is a certain tension which points to other possible contexts as well.

Pogovarjanja / Conversations / Conversas is a part of On Difference2 project http://www.wkv-stuttgart.de

Funded by Culture 2000, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and Cultural Department of the City of Ljubljana

On March 6, 2006, the Austrian Cultural Forum will open SWITCHING WORLDS: DESIRES AND IDENTITIES. This group exhibition, on view through April 15, exposes issues of identity in a transatlantic context against the background of the digital revolution. Taking the desires, dreams, hopes, concerns, and anxieties of Austrian artists who live and work in New York City as point of departure, it comments on global civilization and its margins and explores what it means to be human in the digital era. Examining how it feels to be European in America, the show illustrates the tensions between a history-obsessed European context and the increasingly illusionary "free spirit" of America.

An exhibition catalogue including artist statements, an essay by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, and a fictional fantasy ("Overture") will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.

The Austrian Cultural Forum is located at 11 East 52nd Street in Manhattan. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission is free. For additional information call 212 319 5300 or visit www.acfny.org.

Artificial Afrika : Curated by Vernon Reid & Daniel Dawson | Exhibition Jan. 27th through March 17th | Gigantic ArtSpace (GAS) - NYC

Unknown_41ARTIFICIAL AFRIKA

Curated by Vernon Reid and C. Daniel Dawson
Curatorial Advisors: Brooke Davis Anderson and Danny Simmons

January 27 – March 17, 2006

Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS] proudly presents Artificial Afrika, an exhibition that considers contemporary artistic appropriations of African visual culture through mythology, religious traditions, musical forms, and other culturally-specific practices. The exhibition’s scholarly and artistic contributions deconstruct myths and inventions to challenge the validity of images that continue to define the idea of Africa, an idea often rife with thoughts of disease, poverty, and corruption.  It is through this lens that the exhibition will consider a variety of cultural and artistic forms that not only represent ideas of the past, but more importantly, contribute to the evolving social transformation of the present.

A full-color, 32-page catalog with contributions by C. Daniel Dawson, Vernon Reid, Robert Farris Thompson, and Greg Tate will also be available.

When Dawn Breaks

Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is pleased to present When Dawn Breaks, Dana Melamed's first solo exhibition in New York City. In her work, Melamed amasses numerous layers of urban images and building materials in order to construct cities that exemplify the unremitting destruction and rebuilding of our surroundings. Melamed's works embody narratives of the great cities of the world, yet, at the same time, resist the allusion to a specific time and place.
