Kacy Wiggins, who records his solo excursions in quirky dubwise
ambience as Quiet Personal Electronics (or qpe), is a rare breed of
musician. Where most electronica artists hide behind funky bombast or
cool, digital distance, Wiggins seduces with gentleness, warmth and
goodheartedness. Not quite downtempo, not quite dub, definitely not
drum'n'bass and definitely not lounge, his music is effortlessly
enjoyable but difficult to parse. His label calls the music "hip hop
nouveau," but while that term captures the funky matrix in which
everything on this album floats, it doesn't do justice, for example, to
either the textural pointillism of "Mirrored" or the loping swing of
"Lapland". This music is the aural equivalent of the really smart, kind
of geeky kid you knew in high school, the one who seemed to know
everything but whom no one resented because he was kind and
self-deprecating and funny. Makes you wonder if that's what Kacy
Wiggins is like. If not, he sure knows how to fake it.

As a member of WE(tm), DJ Olive aka Gregor Asch was loosely affiliated
with the arty beats of New York's short lived illbient movement, but
his debut solo release Bodega saw him using his undoubted skills as an
improvisatory turntablist with more hedonistic intent, throwing down
hip multi-culti jams for Brooklyn scenesters. Since then, it seems he's
got around a bit - Heaps As is a kind of audio postcard from a trip
around Australia in May 2005 recorded in Hobart and Perth and edited
together in a succession of guest bedrooms and backpacker hostels for
being being dispatched back to NYC. This slightly rough - and - ready
methodology actually adds to the appeal - unsteady levels and
unexpected jump cuts enhance the sensation of music being strung
together in real time and serve to throw low - slung beats appealingly
off - balance. Which is just as well as the raw material, while amiable
enough, is uniformly polite - dubwise, mid-tempo grooves garlanded by
sparse keyboard p atterns and punctuated ny odds and ends of Cuban
jazz. Despite it's subtleties, Heaps As is best enjoyed loud and with a
drink in one hand. (Chris Sharp), The Wire Magazine
